Located on a
27-acre site in downtown Albuquerque the mix of 1920’s era former
Santa Fe Railroad Locomotive Shops pose unique opportunities for an
economic revitalization of the historic Barelas and South Broadway
communities. As conceptually envisioned this mixed-use redevelopment
project would include:
loft housing
a
museum
a
train station
and
retail space
The
connection between transportation and the built environment was made
at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago at the 1939 World's Fair in New
York. There were profound and lasting consequences throughout the
country and the world.
This unique mix of housing,
museum and retail will utilize the Wheels and Habitat Museum as a
cultural cornerstone for this historically significant site.
Inhabitants will live, dine
and shop within the immediate area. The inclusion of new and
historical loft housing in a culturally enriched urban environment
offers New Urbanist concepts, yet also harkens back to the original
neighborhood archetype of the surrounding historic communities. The
loft housing will be unique in New Mexico and the use of tax credits
for the retail sites would help to pay for the cultural attractions
within the development.
The site’s adjacency to the
Alvarado Transportation Center will enhance its image as a transit
oriented development with access to train, bus and future light rail
and will help showcase the site as an example of how transportation
and the built environment can coexist and enhance each other. |
