Renovation and Rehearsal Hall Addition

Eastern New Mexico University, Portales
2010

The renovation and addition of ENMU’s Music Building transformed the 1940’s era building. The reconfigured interior focused on providing efficient and functional spaces to accommodate choral rehearsals, percussion and piano studios, a recording studio, practice rooms, classrooms, and administrative offices. A key element of the project was the renovation of Buchanan Recital Hall, a 235-seat music performance space. Acoustical improvements, new seating in a raked arrangement, and an audio/visual system to expand the range of performances the space can support transformed the Hall into a community wide asset.

The addition transformed the building’s exterior. A new main entry and other exterior improvements were designed in harmony with the original campus design idiom but with a contemporary interpretation. The addition of windows allows natural light to spill into the previously dark and artificially lit spaces. The windows enliven educational and creative spaces within the facility and establish the Music Building as a distinctive campus building.

The Music Building was designed under the LEED for Schools Rating system and is anticipating LEED Silver Certification.
